NEU Partial Smoke-Free Campus Policy

Policy adopted from: “Tütün Ürünlerinin Zararlarından Korunma ve Denetim Yasası İç Düzeni” (“Internal Order of the Law on the Protection and Control of Harmful Tobacco Products”) of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Based on this policy smoking is not allowed in all buildings (indoor).

Policy extended: Smoking on campus is only allowed in designated areas that includes areas not marked with “Dumansız Bölge” (Smoke free area).

Status: Partial smoke-free campus

NEU Policy on free access to all activities, regardless of ethnicity, religion, disability, immigration status or gender

Based on our university Equal opportunities Policy, our university staff ensures that access to all types of events and activities is accessible to all, regardless of ethnicity, religion, disability, immigration status or gender.

Policy of free access
Near East University commits to ensuring that all events and activities are accessible to all people regardless of their ethnicity, religion, disability, immigration status or gender.

NEU public access to buildings, monuments or natural heritage landscapes of cultural significance
Public access to buildings, monuments or natural heritage landscapes of cultural significance is allowed 7/24. Please check the website of the building or facility you wish to visit for its operating times during public holidays, school holidays etc. or contact with our university reception for more information.

Free public access to open spaces and green spaces
Public access to open spaces and green spaces is allowed 7/24.

NEU Measures and Set Targets for more sustainable commuting

Commuting with bus: 60% of students (and staff) commutes to university by free university buses.

Commuting with bicycle: 5% of students (and staff) commutes to university by bicycle.

Commuting with walking: 5% of students (and staff) commutes to university by foot.

Commuting by other means (cars, etc.): 30% of students (and staff) commutes to university by other means (mostly cars).

NEU Targets for more sustainable commuting

Commuting with bus: university buses manages to transport 100% all of its students and staff to university who wishes to commute to university by bus. Currently additional buses are not needed. Yearly maintenance and updating of university buses is made regularly. No change is estimated in percentage of students and staff (60%) commuting to university by bus in the next 5 years.

Commuting with bicycle: 100% of students who wishes to commute to university by bicycle manages to reach the university. Cooperation with Velespeed (https://tr.velespeed.net/) will continue. It is estimated to increase the percentage of students commuting with bicycle to university to 10% in the next 5 years as a result of this cooperation.

Commuting by other means (cars, etc.): University plans to promote use of electric cars via GÜNSEL to reach its goal of having half of the cars reaching to university with electric engine by 2030. The final percentage of commuting to university by car is expected to drop to 25% by 2030.

Mobile application is in development to further support the need for accessibility (e.g. timing, availability, etc.).

Affordable housing prices for employees:

Studio Flat: 1,400 TL per month.

1 + 1 Flat: 2,000 TL per month.

2 + 1 Flat: 2,850 TL per month (approximately 1628 British Pound per annum for 100 meter square).

The effort to control/reduce the affordable housing to local residents (including university staff), is on-going with support from Near East University (via educational seminars etc).

Market prices for comparison:

Please note that on the market (outside university control), the average 2 bedroom apartment price without furniture is 75,000 TL (approximately 3600 British Pound for 100 meter square) per annum.

Calculation is based on the report (https://www.101evler.com/district-report/lefkosa), where the cost of rent per square meter is 3.07 British Pound. Hence 3.07 per square meter x 100 meter square x 12 months is approximately equal to 3600 British Pound per year.

Based on this protocol Near East University has started to educate the public together with Turkish Cypriot Municipalities Union President on industry, economy, agriculture, health, public trust, labor force and local governments of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Average 2 bedroom apartment price with facilities is 75,000 TL (approximately 3600 British Pound for 100 meter square) per annum where facilities include internet + Central Heating + A.C. + Fridge + TV + WC + Shower + Internet + Electricity + Water.

Free Access to selected sports facilities
Free public access to outdoor tennis court, basketball court and football field in the university recreational areas next to swimming pool is allowed 7/24. Please check the website of the other sports facilities you wish to visit for its operating times during public holidays, school holidays etc. or contact with our university reception for more information.
